Magical Poole Harbor

Spanning 38 square kilometres, Poole Harbour is the largest natural harbour in Europe — and one of the most unique. With winding channels, hidden inlets, salt marshes, and five beautiful islands, it’s a place that feels a world away.

On a sunny day, anchored off an island with sandy beaches, woodland, and wildlife all around, it’s easy to forget you’re even in England — it really does feel a little magical.

The harbour has inspired stories for generations, from Famous Five by Enid Blyton to Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner, both capturing its sense of adventure and mystery.

Wildlife is part of the experience too — from curious seals and occasional dolphins to an abundance of birdlife, and even the chance of spotting a white-tailed eagle.

The Islands

Poole Harbour is home to five main islands — Brownsea, Furzey, Green, Round, and Long — most of which are privately owned.

Brownsea Island is owned by the National Trust and is open to visitors. Part of the island, including the impressive Brownsea Castle, gatehouse, and surrounding lawns, is owned by the John Lewis Partnership — a truly stunning spot to admire from the water.

The remaining islands — Furzey, Green, Round, and Long — are privately owned, each adding to the harbour’s peaceful, exclusive feel.

Poole Harbour has a special pull — once you’ve experienced it, you’ll want to come back again.
